Transactional Analysis
Transactional Analysis (TA) is a Humanistic and Integrative model of psychotherapy that was developed by the American Psychiatrist Dr Eric Berne in the 1960’s. Dr Berne developed his theory of personality and interpersonal communication over several years of experience and published many articles in psychiatric journal literature. He developed simple models to help with understanding psychological processes using colloquial language aimed at demystifying the process of change. The key philosophy of TA is that everyone has value, worth and dignity and that people have the capacity to think and to decide their own destiny and that these decisions can be changed. The practise of TA includes open communication and a mutually agreed ‘contract’ which supports joint responsibility for the process of change. TA can be used effectively on both short term agendas for change and for more complex or long standing issues.
